engine diagnostics

Automotive Diagnostics

An engine diagnostic test is done during tune-up to see what alterations or corrections are needed in the engine.

What Does This Test Include?

During this test, also known as Scope Test, there is

• Checking of the engine’s computer system
• A visual check and inspection of all the wires, plugs, rotors, distributor caps, filter and all the engine connections etc.
• The engine’s charging system is inspected to see if there are any faults.
• It is assessed if any part is broken or damaged and needs to be fixed or replaced.
• When all the systems are checked, a detailed Inspection Report is made.

When Should You Have A Scope Test?

Your vehicle’s manual would have instructions about when you should get this test done. However, you should also get your engine checked if fuel economy is poor, if the engine checking warning light is on or the running of the engine is not smooth.

If you are driving and you see the warning light has come on, this means that you must take your car for an inspection right away. There could be a sensor problem or something wrong with the engine connections.

If you notice that the engine check light has started to flash, this means that the problem is more serious and needs immediate attention. If you ignore this sign, it could result in catalytic convertor damage and could cause you a lot of monetary loss in terms of repair and replacements. The light basically lets you know that some component of the vehicle’s engine is not operating the way it is supposed to. This problem is detected by the vehicle’s computer.

Ignition System:

When you turn the key in your car’s ignition, electric energy is transmitted to the spark plug. This charge needs to be delivered at the right time and with designated strength; otherwise the engine will fail to work perfectly.

Vehicle’s Air Conditioning System:

This should also be checked once a year, or as your vehicle’s user manual determines.

Over time, a vehicle’s air conditioning system may start losing its efficiency. This may be because of a faulty component, leaking of the AC gas, inadequate pressure or temperature or any other break in the system. Moisture, dirt and impurities from outside air can also cause the air conditioning to work poorly.

If your system is not working perfectly, do get it checked. The checking will involve:
• A visual examination of all pipes, connections and components
• Checking for any leaks
• Checking the pressure of the gas
• A detailed report about the condition of the air condition system and an estimate of what the repairs would cost you.

When you go to get your air condition serviced, the gas will be removed, all the pipes and connections will be checked for a leak, and then pressurized gas will be filled again.

If your air condition gas (also known as refrigerant) has leaked, your air condition will not function well. This is the most common cause of a faulty air condition system. Therefore it is important to check your system for leaks and repair them soon; otherwise it might lead to a more serious problem later on.
